I recently had a conversation with someone about reading Young Adult fiction. They were asking if they, as an adult could read my YA books. I said, ‘Of course you can!’
I think that adults often think that they need to read intellectual books by renown authors that have won impressive prizes. While all these things are good, they aren’t the only things adults should read.
Which parent hasn’t enjoyed reading about Narnia, Middle Earth or Hogwarts? We shouldn’t need the excuse of children to pick up a book or two. I don’t know about you, but reading these books as an adult has only increased my enjoyment. The authors have deliberately included things that perhaps a child would overlook but the adult would enjoy.
Many YA authors have won prizes for their ground breaking books and their content is full of thought provoking stuff. Why don’t you give it a go?
Here are three reasons why (my) YA fiction is suitable for adults too:
- Books should deal with and talk about the issues that we face today. I like to do this … but my books tend to do it with a twist. I want to make people (not just teens) think about the world they live in and the life they lead.
- Young adult books, I feel, should free from offensive language and behaviour but still tackle the big things in life. Characters should be real with flaws and make mistakes but I want my characters to have a chance to redeem themselves or the situation by thinking outside the box. Reading one of my books relies on the story to speak.
- Do any of us feel as old as we are? I know I feel like I’m still 18! I write the stories that I enjoy … surely I’m not the only adult that enjoys them! What is the point in reading a book just because it makes you look good? I say, read what you enjoy.
I hope you find some great books to read over the summer.
Of course, if you are looking for ideas, you can always pick up one of mine!
